Hamburger Mary’s open in Crossroads, West Elm to follow?
December 23, 2009 | 4 Comments
This blog is in danger of becoming a chronicle of chain stores, but here goes…
Hamburger Mary’s is now open at 101 Southwest Boulevard (at Baltimore Ave.) in Downtown’s Crossroads gayborhood. KC is the 10th for location for this campy burger joint.
We are also hearing rumblings that West Elm’s demise in Leawood might not be the last word in KC for the furniture and housewares store. West Elm may re-open somewhere Downtown. Apparently they found that most of their business was coming from Downtown and Midtown. Well, duh! A store like this never made sense on the suburban fringe.
West Elm in Downtown would be very complimentary to the many housewares and home design businesses in the Crossroads Districts, although it would also bring some new competition to the locally-owned businesses.

Went to that West Elm last week to see if anything was priced to move. Feels like the bastard child of Pottery Barn.
Very interested in some gay beef.
A friend of mine went last night and it wasn’t good.
I hope they get it straightened out so they’re successful.

It took awhile for the Hamburger Marys in Fort Lauderdale to catch its stride. Then the owners gave up the francise due to excessive fees and now the place is much better as a local joint called Rosies.
We went to HM’s last Wednesday. I’ve been to the ones in Honolulu, Palm Springs and Las Vegas. The hostess promptly seated us but it took forever to get served. There were dozens of mincing queens prancing all over the place but no one to wait on us. When we did get served, he was nice enough but seemed distracted. When we called to ask if the joint was open, the person who answered didn’t seem to know what the hours were. Hmmm? The food was okay, large portions, somewhat limited menu. I had a BLT with guacamole. Nice idea but it doesn’t work. The guac ended up in between my fingers and all over my hands. The thump-thump-thump of the techno or disco or whatever it was, was incredibly annoying. Talk about gay stereotyped music. A little bit is okay but enough already! Nice crowds, martini bar looked interesting and we’ll probably go back and try that. I know the joint is new, and new can mean disorganized and we want the joint to succeed. Someone needs to herd the servers and direct them. Tell the hostess what the hours are. Make sure people get wait on promptly. A man I think was the restaurant manager did come out and ask if everything was ok and by that time it pretty much was. We appreciated that. We’ll be back and we wish HM’s in KC mucho successo!
