Village West becomes outlet mall, gets new public art

The Biz Journal reports that the Legends at Village West is switching to an outlet mall format. The strip mall adjacent to the Kansas Speedway and the new Wizards stadium is also getting some new public art to along with the new outlet mall format – a giant statue of an overweight Midwestern in a sweatshirt and stirrup pants.

Most of the people who fit that description can still be found getting mugged and purse-snatched in the parking lot of the nearby Walmart.

What do you make of it? Is this the beginning of a repetitive circle around the toilet-bowl for the “Legends”?

It seems to me if the Great Mall out near Gardner can’t thrive, then a parking lot big-box collection of retailers way out west on I-70 doesn’t have much of a chance.

Some people talk about the raceway as being a big attraction, but I think their numbers (and definitely revenue) have been trending down the last 3 years. Consider how they used to prevent people from bringing their own alcohol / food / soda into the raceway, to help drive up revenue. These days, you can bring all the alcohol / food / soda you please, instead of paying for $9 beers and $7 burgers. This has a huge impact on the profitability of the entire project.

Do you suppose Cerner is re-thinking the viability of their decision? I suspect the site isn’t so attractive with a name like “Village West Outlet Center”.
