If you haven’t heard yet, a massive landslide/sinkhole has destroyed part of the gigantic Grandview Triangle freeway interchange in southern Kansas City, likely for weeks to months to come. MoDOT has posted some detour routes for Monday’s commute, but none are very helpful.
Residents who commute to the Johnson County office parks from southern and southeastern Missouri suburbs will be seriously screwed. Sadly the region’s fragmented and funding-starved bus systems offers no suburb-to-suburb options for folks who are dependent on their cars for getting to work.

@BlogKC
That bridge has had TWO horrible dips in it for going on a year. I’ve almost bottomed out my boat trailer on them several times. I’ve been telling my wife for 6 months that they are going to close this bridge down soon. It wasn’t a landslide that caused it…it was bad engineering from the beginning.
This is exactly what a bus system is for and is a far superior option to light rail. Unfortunately, KC is a car culture. The cities should see this as an opportunity to get people riding the bus. Instead, they’ll work like every other government entity and move slow as molasses and not offer increased bus service for these people whose lives were just made markedly worse.
Im not sure why this is even news. So, stupid people that live 20, 30 minutes from where they work are inconvenienced in their “convenient” lifestyle!? I haven’t owned a car for years and am able to walk everywhere I go…like anyone in a city should. Don’t feel sorry for these idiots at all…
Ryan – so everyone who commutes to work is an idiot? That’s kind of harsh. I actually do feel sorry for you because you’re obviously an angry person.
The real “idiot” in this situation is the contracting company who rushed to get the biggest construction project in Missouri finished in record time just so they could get a huge bonus from MODOT. I have no doubt their success was at the expense of several things (including the life of one worker who was killed thanks to shody safetey practices). Is it too much to build a bridge that can last for more than 5 years?
