Jackson County Legislature
The County Courthouse gets a second breath of fresh air with Crystal Williams ousting sitting Chairman Henry Rizzo and Theresa Garza Ruiz beating back a Rizzo-sponsored challenger. Legislator-for-life Fred Arbanas was able to overcome a challenge from KCMO City Councilman Terry Riley.

Johnson County Commission Chair
Former Overland Park Mayor Ed Eilert came out of ahead of incumbent Annabeth Surbaugh, but the two will face off again in a November run-off election.

Proposition C
Missouri overwhelming votes to opt out of the federal health care reform, the first state to do so. Finally Missouri gets to first in the nation at something, although it’s likely the whole hot mess will go to the US Supreme Court. The win was quite a blow-out with over 70% voting yes and carrying every county but St. Louis City and KCMO south of the river. Even Democratic areas like Columbia, St. Joseph, and St. Louis County voted for it.

US Senate – Kansas Republican primary
At our bedtime conservative Jerry Moran was narrowly leading super-conservative Todd Tiahrt to replace Sam Brokeback in the US Senate.

Missouri House 40th District
In this Old Northeast Battle Royale, JJ Rizzo proves the fourth time is the charm, squeaking past Will Royster by just 10 votes. We wouldn’t be surprised to see a recount in this race. Sadly for the Rizzo family, JJ’s dad Henry just lost his seat on the Jackson County Legislature.

Missouri Senate 8th District
In the eastern suburbs Bryan Pratt narrowly out-conservatived Will Kraus for stripper-obsessed Matt Bartle’s old State Senate seat.

Local Republican blogger Timothy Burger has some good analysis on Kris Kobach’s loss to Dennis Moore. Moore’s hold on the third district is a constant thorn in the side of Kansas Republicans, with the party alternating between conservative and moderate candidates without success. They also tried a redistricting to move some of the liberal stronghold of Douglas county out of the district. This time it was the conservatives’ turn, and the more moderate inner suburbs trumped the conservative exurbs to give Moore his first victory in Johnson County.

One theme has emerged from the local results, money doesn’t always buy votes. Jeanne Patterson and the Bistate 2 committee both spent an unprecedented $3 million in their respective races, and both lost. Bistate failed in all five counties except Jackson. Cleaver was bolstered by huge turnout in the urban core.

Statewide… McCaskill failed to keep the rural vote that won her the primary, and scored surprisingly narrow victories in eastern Jackson and Boone counties. That helped Blunt offset her huge margins in KC and St. Louis. The Lt. Governor’s race is still too close to call, but Pete Kinder is leading. Looks like the Republicans have full control of Jeff City for the first time in 80+ years, except for Attorney General and Secretary of State.

In Kansas, US Rep. Dennis Moore hung on again and even seems to have carried Johnson County.

All the provisional votes are counted in the Kansas 3rd Congressional District and Kris Kobach narrowly defeats Adam Taff. This will be an interesting race with an ultra-consertive challenging three-term incumbent and moderate Democrat Dennis Moore in a changing district. In the last redistricting, Republicans managed to remove part of a liberal stronghold in Lawrence. While strongly conservative Johnson County continues its sprawl southward, the northeastern part of the county is becoming somewhat more moderate, especially on social issues. Meanwhile, strongly Democratic Wyandotte County is experiencing rapid suburbanization in the west.
